BIOGRAPHY

Josie d'Avernas began her role as Associate Director of the Research Institute for Aging on July 1, 2006. Josie has a Master of Science degree from the Department of Health Studies and Gerontology at the University of Waterloo. She divides her time between the RIA and her role as Vice President Program Development and Innovation for Schlegel Seniors Villages.

In her 16 years experience as a health promotion consultant specializing in strategic planning, training and consultation, facilitation, policy analysis, literature synthesis, knowledge transfer, evaluation and research. Some of the organizations she has worked with include: The National Cancer Institute of Canada (Canadian Tobacco Control Research Initiative), The Program Training and Consultation Centre, The Canadian Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute of Canada, Health Canada, Department of National Defense, and Corrections Canada. She has won several awards for her work in tobacco control, including two community champion awards, the Heather Crowe Award, and the Mary Jane Ashley Award for Lifetime Outstanding Achievement in tobacco control.

Josie's wealth of experience in the field of health promotion, disease prevention and policy development assist the RIA in the development and implementation of training programs, policies, and research proposals.
