Research Project Detail

UW Smart Walker Project

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Pascal Poupart, University of Waterloo

RESEARCH PROGRAM ASSOCIATION: Functional Abilities Program

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this project is to develop prototype models of "Smart Walkers" for use in long-term care facilities, specifically for residents with early to mid-stage dementia. Interventions could include technology to help residents recognize and use their walker effectively, as well as technology to monitor gait patterns and warn the user or health-care worker of any potential for falls.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATION
If a Smart Walker were developed successfully, it would have positive implications for quality of life for those residents using the walker because they would have a greater chance for success in recognizing and using the walker, and would have access to the technology that may warn them or health-care workers about an increased potential for falls.
