Research Project Detail

Predictors of walking competency in ambulatory individuals living in long-term care

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Lora Giangregorio, University of Waterloo

RESEARCH PROGRAM ASSOCIATION: Functional Abilities Program

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this pilot study is to characterize walking competency in individuals at high risk of falls, namely ambulatory elderly individuals living in long-term care. The pilot data will enable the research team to evaluate several research questions pertaining to the assessment of gait and the quantitative assessment of physical activity profiles.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATION:
By better understanding the reasons why elderly individuals fall, it may be possible to reduce the likelihood of falls and therefore reduce the likelihood of fractures.

The results of this study will help answer the question "what is it about the way in which elderly people walk that makes them fall?" This may assist rehabilitation specialists in minimizing those factors that contribute to falls.

Results of this study will act as pilot data for a larger study examining the link between falls, fractures, vitamin D deficiency and quality of life.
