Research Project Detail

A new exercise mode for aerobic training in frail, older adults

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Denise Connelly, University of Western Ontario

RESEARCH PROGRAM ASSOCIATION: Functional Abilities Program

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The objective of this study is to examine the utility of a semi-recumbent all-extremity exercise machine, such as the "NuStep", to develop cardiorespiratory fitness in frail, older adults. Thirty-two men and women living in long-term care facilities were asked to complete seated exercise, according to a specific exercise protocol, on a NuStep exercise machine three times weekly for 12 weeks.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS
The exercise regimen prescribed in this study may have positive effects of the cardiovascular function and strength of residents living in long-term care facilities. The residents participating in the study will experience these benefits, and residents who have not participated in the study will benefit from the knowledge gained based on the study results. All together, this study will greatly increase the awareness of the role of cardiovascular training for elderly individuals.

This information will be of direct benefit to clinicians who prescribe exercise as a treatment intervention for residents of long-term care facilities.
