Schlegel Centre for Learning, Research & Innovation in Long Term Care

North Campus

The Schlegel organization was awarded a 192-bed long-term care home to be located on the North Campus of the University of Waterloo. This will be the hub location for the Schlegel Centre for Learning, Research & Innovation (CLRI) in Long Term Care's teaching long-term care (LTC) home, and will be adjacent to a research and training building (the RIA building).

These buildings are designed with learning, research and social spaces that encourage co-mingling of seniors, students, educators and researchers. They will be home to University of Waterloo and Conestoga College programs for learning and applied research related to seniors care and living.

Construction of the research building and LTC home will begin in 2013, with completion 24 months later. The research building, which will house CLRI faculty, staff and labs is made possible through the personal philanthropy of Dr. Ron Schlegel who has donated $3 Million to build it. The LTC home will operate as one of the Schlegel Villages and all revenue over cost will be donated back into research activities.

Ontario’s first purpose-built Teaching Long-Term Care Home will be completed in three phases:

  1. Long-term care home with adjacent Research and Training building
  2. Retirement home and Town Square
  3. Retirement home
