Dietitians of Canada Workshop Series
Making the Most of Mealtimes with Dr. Heather Keller
Rm SCC115, Oakham House (Ryerson Student Campus Centre)
55 Gould Street
Toronto, ON
Malnutrition and specifically under-nutrition is common in older adults with dementia living in the community, presenting to hospitals or residing in long term care homes. There are several potential causes to this malnutrition including food access, quality of diet and interest in eating. This workshop will focus on the latter and specifically how the psychosocial environment influences food intake. The Life Nourishment Theory provides an understanding of this psychosocial influence and will be the basis for this workshop. This theory is based on The Eating Together study conducted with community living families experiencing dementia and identifies what is meaningful about meals and how mealtimes can improve quality of life. Although this research is based on older adults with dementia, the theory has application to all residents and patients. Strategies to make the most of meal times will be discussed.
